They had just progressed to the European Cup semi-final when their plane crashed on the runway as it tried to take-off.
Sir Bobby was pulled away from the blaze by goalkeeper Harry Gregg as seven team-mates - Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam Whelan - died instantly.
Duncan Edwards lost his battle in hospital 15 days later.
Charlton hasn't spoken publicly about the disaster often, but did open his heart to ITV's Michael Parkinson.
Talking at the time, he said: 'I thought, "Why me? Why am I here with nothing happened to me other than a little gash on the head" and all these other friends had been killed?
'I felt it wasn't fair, why should it be me? It took a long time for me to feel better about it, certainly.
'It was such a momentous event, for so many young people to die just on the verge of the great success that was ahead of them, and I couldn't understand why.'
