Van Gaal lined up to be next Man United boss as Moyes faces axe in summer after disastrous first season at Old Trafford

Louis Van Gaal has been lined up as a potential replacement for David Moyes, as pressure mounts on the Manchester United manager after another setback in a calamitous first season in charge.
Reports in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf have claimed an Old Trafford delegation met with Van Gaal earlier this week, in the wake of a Champions’ League defeat against Bayern Munich that ended Moyes’ hopes of having something to show for his debut campaign as United boss.
United denied any such meeting took place, but it is clear Van Gaal is figuring prominently in their thoughts as they deliberate over Moyes’ future.

Sportsmail revealed the policy shift over the former Everton manager in the wake of a last 16 first-leg defeat by Olympiacos that set alarm bells ringing among United bosses.
The signals coming out of Old Trafford had always been that Moyes would have every opportunity to stamp his mark on a new era and would be given until next Christmas, at least, to succeed.
But such was the sense of dismay at a dismal performance in Athens that, even though the damage was repaired in the return leg, doubts crept in about his suitability and thoughts turned to who might replace him.
